Doctor Who establishes itself in the metaverse. BBC Studios has teamed up with reality+ to publish a collection of immersive experiences in The Sandbox metaverse.

In the world of The Sandbox, fans can interact with immersive content from their favorite brands, including Top Gear and Doctor Who, and enjoy an events section hosted by the BBC. Experts have declared that the “metaverse is dead,” an overstated trend, but apparently nobody has told Doctor Who about it.

The joint venture between BBC Studios and Reality+ marks the first time the BBC has had a home in the Metaverse following a handful of brand activation experiments with Metaverse platforms. Part virtual property, part amusement park, The Sandbox fully embodies the idea of the metaverse as a continuous shared digital space where gamers and brands can build, own and monetize their experiences on the blockchain.

Nicki Sheard, President of Trademarks and Licensing at BBC Studios, said in a statement: “I am delighted that BBC
Studios is collaborating with Reality+ and The Sandbox on this exciting project. While the metaverse is still in its infancy, it could impact the way we consume and experience entertainment in the future, and I look forward to seeing how fans engage with our brands in this space. This project is part of BBC Studios’ broader ambitious plans to expand our brands into new categories, with innovative technologies and platforms being an integral part of this.”

BBC Studios joins over 400 other entertainment brands that have participated in the sandbox to date, including Warner Music Group, Ubisoft, Gucci Vault, The Walking Dead and Adidas.

Reality+ co-founder Tony Pearce said in a statement: “We are delighted to have extended our partnership
with BBC Studios, not only to help them push the boundaries of what is possible in the Metaverse, but also to bring exciting new experiences to fans of these world-renowned TV shows. We have already achieved so much with the digital trading card game Doctor Who: Worlds Apart, and with an amazing platform like The Sandbox there is still much more to come.”

Sebastien Borget, COO at The Sandbox, added in a statement: “We are proud that BBC Studios has selected Reality+, a certified Metaverse agency partner working on The Sandbox platform, to work with top global brands such as Doctor Who and Top Gear to enter the Metaverse.” The BBC has a history of groundbreaking content that takes the latest technology and brings it into mainstream households. We believe this endeavor is an important step in bringing British culture and its fans to virtual worlds.”

BBC Studios’ Metaverse section of The Sandbox will launch later this year and more details will be released later.

Reality+ helps global brands transition to Web3 with tailored product, community and development strategies, backed by an award-winning technology platform. The company previously worked with BBC Studios to develop the digital trading card game Doctor Who: Worlds Apart.

The BBC said it has a responsibility to operate with the least possible impact on the environment
and it works with Reality+ and The Sandbox to ensure it adheres to its sustainable practices.
