An ILTUWS reader recently sent us the photo above. We called both the restaurant and the landlord but couldn’t get in touch with anyone.
Located on Broadway between 103rd and 104th streets, The Jerusalem Restaurant has been serving Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes since 1979 one of Oldest restaurants on the Upper West Side (so far).
Satisfied customers have detailed their decades-long relationship with the restaurant through online reviews sites, with insiders sharing their favorite orders and tips on which chef makes the best chicken. Their website (which is currently down) boasted freshly made “famous pita” and reviewers seem to agree on the high quality. The Jerusalem Restaurant was featured in I Love The Upper West Side Overview of the best original UWS fast food places in 2019, with Adrienne Cooper Writing: “Aside from the healthy feeling this meal gives you, it’s a great stop for a crowd…” An Esser review was similarly positive, calling the Jerusalem Restaurant “a treat for vegetarians.”
The Jerusalem Restaurant will remain in the memories of its many regular guests, as well as in the lyrics of a famous song University of Columbia Alumni Vampire Weekend. fingers back, published in 2013, is about a Jewish woman who falls in love with an Arab falafel shop worker and includes the line “Singing in Jerusalem next year; You know that place on 103rd Street and Broadway?” (The music video may also include a brief shot of a poster that once hung on the bar’s wall).
When asked about the song in 2013Jerusalem’s owner said he hadn’t heard it, but still didn’t like it.
Bwog: What do you think of the song?
Jerusalem: I do not like it.
Bwog: Did you hear it?
Jerusalem: NO.
When asked, “If you could choose a song to write about this restaurant, what would it be about?” they simply replied, “Peace in the world.”
