Summary of position

The communications manager collects and shares compelling stories about GVLT, complex issues in conservation and recreation, and the impact on donors with our community. Backed by a strong, respected brand and a collaborative team, the communications manager upholds the trusted voice of GVLT and mobilizes the community for the value of trails and open country. In line with GVLT’s 5 year strategic plan, the communications manager will develop and implement an annual communications plan. You will lead content development and execution for all GVLT communication channels including website, email marketing, social media, print materials and earned media. The communications manager works closely with all members of the organization to share project updates, stories, events, news and development opportunities. The ideal candidate is a strong writer with experience communicating on recreational and conservation issues. You will bring hands-on knowledge of the Gallatin Valley community, best practices for nonprofit and charitable communications, and digital marketing strategies.

professional duties

Communication strategy and planning (15%):

  • Develop, lead and evaluate an annual communication plan to reach target groups using GVLT’s 5-year strategic plan.
  • Create and monitor an annual budget to support communication strategies.
  • Preserve and encourage consistent use of the GVLT brand in all communications.

Content creation and distribution (80%):

  • Maintain a content calendar to ensure a regular rhythm of stories across all GVLT communication channels.
  • Work closely with the Land and Trails teams to share updates and news on projects.
  • Work with the development team on digital fundraisers and event promotion.
  • Work with the NextGen Advisory Board to promote events for young professionals.
  • Share and promote messages from community partners.
  • Lead all social media strategy and content development.
  • Manage and update the GVLT website.
  • Write and distribute press releases and manage local media relations.
  • Lead the creative design process for promotional materials, annual reports, appeals, publications, advertisements and social media.
  • Maintain an ever-growing library of videos, photos, and other visual resources.
  • Create and write monthly articles for the GVLT website and email newsletter.

Additional duties (5%):

  • Attend staff, team, committee and board meetings, as well as organizational training.
  • Attend GVLT fundraising events.
  • Represent GVLT at community meetings and other outreach opportunities.
  • Office and administrative tasks as required.


  • At least three years of communications experience, preferably with a non-profit organization.
  • Training and/or experience in teaching nature conservation or leisure topics.

skills and knowledge

  • Formal and conversational writing with attention to detail and grammar.
  • Comfort in learning new technologies, including new tools and platforms.
  • Willing to take initiative and solve problems independently.
  • Team spirit at work within teams and between teams of the organization.
  • Demonstrated commitment to GVLT’s mission.
  • Experience with social media platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva and WordPress preferred
  • High level of discretion and sensitivity to the nuances and confidentiality of private property transactions and property owners.
  • Ability to communicate complex conservation and recreation issues to the general public in a balanced and clear manner.


  • After a year of service, paid leave is increased from 2 weeks to 3 weeks. After five years of employment, the entitlement to paid leave gradually increases to five weeks.
  • 10 days paid personal leave, 10 paid holidays and 2 days off
